This week we're looking at another piece that was last on display in the exhibit, Glamour: Fashionable Red Deer - we've seen the outside, let's have a look at the inside!

Dress, 1891, silk, satin. Gift of the Estate of Mary Jane Houston, 1986.144.1a/b

Dress, Silk and Satin, 1891

This dress was worn by Mary Jane Dixon when she married Walter G. Houston on October 28, 1891.

Late 19th century bodices were often boned so that they would lay flat against the body. The metal bones in this bodice did not constrain a woman's waist, instead they helped the decorative draping on the front lay neatly. The inside of this bodice also has contrasting blue silk seam binding. Details like this show how beauty and practicality can coexist.
