Plaid Shawl, late 19th Century

This shawl was originally worn by Mary Ann Van Dyke (nee Donovan), who brought it with her to Canada from Ireland. This shawl is a good example of the type of shawl worn by countrywomen of the British Isles, based on traditions much older than the fashion of ‘Kashmir shawls’. They were hand woven for centuries, but made commercially in the later 19th century.
