Hello, MAG Community!

It’s been 3 months (or ¼ of the year!) that the MAG has now been closed to the public. We are excited to announce that will soon be coming to an end! We are slated to officially reopen our doors to the public on Thursday, July 2nd, 2020. Our operating hours for July & August will be from 10 am - 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday. We will not be open on the weekends or open late for the First Friday of the month this summer.

MAG Hours of Operation 2020

Over the last couple of months, MAG staff have been hard at work putting processes into place and adjusting cleaning and sanitizing protocols of our facility to ensure our visitors feel safe returning to the museum. You will notice some definite changes to your visit at the MAG moving forward:

  • While our galleries remain free to visit, we ask that you book a time slot online in advance of your visit. This will allow us to better control the number of visitors we have in the building as well as allowing the space to observe proper social distancing in our galleries. We request visitors use the recently installed directional arrows to guide their way throughout the gallery spaces.

  • As previously announced, our temporary exhibitions for this summer have been cancelled. Our permanent history exhibition, Remarkable Red Deer: Stories from the Heart of the Parkland, remains open. There have been some changes in this space (ie. the removal of all toys and hands on activities) but some updates, too. We’ve taken the freed up space as an opportunity to display a variety of vintage toys in our Children's Gallery, and bring out some aretfacts representative of early settlers in Alberta. Also on display (from July 2-September 5, 2020) will be Benalto painter David More’s recently completed (and never exhibited!) Shore Figures: Sylvan Lake.

With the exception of our Week @ the Museum: Summer Camps in July & August and the Taking it to the Streets: Printmaking with Marnie Blair MAGSampler on July 22 (pre-registration is required for both programs), there will be no drop-in or registerable programs running at the MAG this summer. We anticipate resuming our drop-in art programs in some capacity in Fall 2020.

On the topic of our Week @ the Museum: Summer Camps, guidelines for the operation of our summer camps under the current COVID-19 Alberta Health Recommendations have recently been made available. Parents are encouraged to carefully review these guidelines with their children prior to their Week @ the Museum.

Exit surveys will be available to be completed after your visit to the MAG. We would love to hear how your visit went, and how we can improve on it in the future.

Please feel free to contact us at 403.309.8405, or by email, at, with any questions or comments. We look forward to seeing you back at the MAG this summer!
