Keeping the Creativity at Home with MAGnificent Saturdays - May 30, 2020

Today's MAGnificent Saturdays art activity for you to do at home:

Hearts in the Window

You will be making your own tissue paper hearts to hang in your window!

‘Hearts in the Window is a movement to spread warmth and reassurance in the time of COVID-19.

Hearts in the Window encourages people to display something heart-shaped in their home where neighbours and passersby can see, in the hopes of raising a few spirits during these challenging times.

A Facebook page has been set up for people to share pictures of their displays. It started in B.C. and it now has photos and messages from all over the world! Join us in making Hearts in the Window!

Don't forget to tag us on Facebook, Twitter @RedDeerMuseum or Instagram @rdmag #MAGsatathome with your creations! We'd love to see them.

You can download the instructions here.

What You Need: ziplock bag, piece of white paper, pencil, scissors, various colours of crepe or tissue paper, watered down glue (25%) water, paintbrush.

Step 1: Cut open a ziplock bag so that you have 2 equal sizes. Draw a heart on a piece of paper. Once you are happy with the shape and size of your heart, cut it out. Pour some glue in a container then add about 25% water to the glue. Mix well. Place the heart under one piece of the bag.

Step 2: Using a paintbrush, begin gluing pieces of crepe or tissue paper to the bag, making sure to cover the heart.

*You do want to ‘wet’ the coloured paper with glue. However, over working the glue will cause the tissue paper to rip.

Step 3: Once you have covered the whole heart with different colours of paper, add 2 more layers of coloured crepe to the initial heart. *You need to make sure to wash the paintbrush really well with soap and water when ?nished with the brush!

Step 4: When you have added all the layers of paper, place the other piece of ziplock bag over the heart, and use your hands to ?atten any ripples or bubbles out of the heart. Leave the heart between the bags for about an hour. Carefully peel the top piece of bag off the heart.

*If some of the coloured paper lifts up at this point, just use one of your ?ngers to gently put the paper back in place.

Step 5: Once the heart is completely dry, (this will take a few hours to overnight), peel it off the bag and use the scissors to reshape the heart. Now you can place your Heart in the Window!
